The Houston division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has come under fire for posting an image on Twitter that seemingly encourages hazardous gun usage.
The image showcased a person loading a magazine with a firearm aimed towards their lower body. This image, disseminated by the ATF's Houston branch, ignited a flurry of criticisms from Twitter users, stressing the dangerousness of such a firearm handling practice.
The National Rifle Association emphasizes three cardinal rules of firearm handling: maintaining the gun aimed in a secure direction, ensuring your finger is off the trigger unless ready to fire, and keeping the gun unloaded until ready for use.
Podcast host Abby Libby expressed her disbelief in a tweet, “Are these the people regulating our guns???"
Aidan Johnston, who oversees Federal Affairs for Gun Owners of America, also commented, "Just like me, every time I go for a shooting session, I too load my magazines while standing down range & with my OPEN BOLT machine guns pointed straight at me," mockingly indicating the absurdity of the image's depicted situation.
