"Another Typical Day: Shannon Watts Expresses Strong Disapproval of Jason Aldean's Latest Music Video"

The renowned country musician, Jason Aldean, has stirred up a debate concerning his latest song's lyrics, which some believe may endorse gun violence.

Aldean, aged 46, who took the stage at the tragic Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas in 2017 during which a gunman took the lives of 61 attendees and wounded more than 400, unveiled the music video for his song "Try That in a Small Town" this past Saturday.

The song narrates the contrast between life in a bustling city versus that in a quieter, smaller town. It warns anyone who might "cross that line" by showing disrespect to the law enforcement or the national flag, to "try that in a small town." The song continues: "Observe how far you can get down the road/In these parts, we look after our own/ Cross that line, it won't be long/ Before you discover, I suggest you don't/Try that in a small town."

Aldean's lyrics also recount the tale of a firearm his grandfather bequeathed him, remarking that he has no intention of relinquishing it, and expressing skepticism about any potential confiscation efforts.

The video accompanying "Try That in a Small Town" features Aldean performing in front of the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, with clips of protests and police encounters interspersed throughout the video.

Aldean took to social media to explain the sentiment behind his song, noting the sense of community and mutual protection inherent in small-town life, something he believes has been lost in recent times. He expressed a longing for a return to that sense of solidarity and conveyed his hopes that his music video would resonate with others who feel the same.

Shannon Watts, founder of the non-profit Moms Demand, an organization dedicated to decreasing gun violence in the U.S., tweeted in reaction: "@Jason_Aldean – who was performing during the horrific mass shooting at a 2017 Las Vegas concert that resulted in 60 fatalities and over 400 injuries – has released a song entitled 'Try That In A Small Town,' implying that he and his comrades would resort to firearms if anyone attempted to confiscate theirs."
